An RTI investigation has exposed that the blankets provided to AC train passengers in India are washed only once a month, or sometimes less frequently. This revelation has raised concerns about the hygiene standards maintained by the Railways. While sheets and pillow covers are laundered after each use, blankets are simply folded and stored in the coaches. This practice, coupled with the lack of regular washing, could potentially pose health risks to passengers.
The Railways has defended its cleaning practices, stating that the fees for bedding are included in the ticket price and that additional bedding services can be purchased on certain trains. However, the infrequent washing of blankets remains a significant issue.
The RTI also disclosed that the Indian Railways operates 46 departmental laundries and 25 BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) laundries.
